As of April 10, Auckland’s beer scene got a little bit craftier, with the opening of the Hopscotch Beer Company. Run by Hugh Grierson, the company is focussed on making Auckland an even greater place to live, through good beer of course. As such, Hopscotch focuses on selling a great range of craft beer on tap for take-home customers, along with a selection of bottled beer.

According to Hugh, the beer scene in Auckland is a little dismal and lagging a long way behind their fellow beer lovers in Wellington, Christchurch and even Hamilton. To remedy this fact he has collected some of his favourite beers and has them on tap in store, including locals like Croucher, Mikes, Epic and Townsend, as well as a few imports like US beers from Green Flash, Coronado and Ballast Point. “I can sell what ever I like,” he says. “Which is fun.”

And Hugh has big plans for the company with the aim of improving craft beer availability in Auckland both onsite at his shop and through distribution. And that means getting more taps – he says 12 just doesn’t seem like enough.

For those looking to try something new, Hugh says his tastings are free and customers can bring their own bottles or buy German flip tops in store. Oh, and if you have a cracking brew, send him a sample because you just might find yourself on tap.
