Drawing parallels between themselves and Kiwi long jumper Yvette Corlett (nee Williams) – who won Olympic gold at Helsinki in 1952 – Marlborough based brewers Moa have claimed another gold medal at the Helsinki Beer Awards in Finland.

While Helsinki might not be on the radar of the southern hemisphere, Moa Methode Pilsner won gold ahead of 65 other brews to win top honours in its category.

Understandably, Moa founder and executive brewer Josh Scott is pretty chuffed with the win.

“We’re pretty happy with our Methode,” he says. “She prepared well and even though she was 17,000 km from home, she still dominated against a pretty big field.”

The Methode took out the Pale Lager Does Not Exceed 6% category ahead of local brewers from Finland’s Rooster Beer Cellar by Laitilan Beverages, and Kaiser Lager from Nokia’s brewery, which took silver and bronze respectively.

Already exporting to the Finnish market, Moa went up against 300 international beers, entering its Pale Ale, Methode, Noir, Imperial Stout and Breakfast brews.

This marks the 40th medal for the Moa Brewing Company in its 10 years of business.
