ExBEERimental Science is back for 2025, challenging Tasmanian brewers to test whether the smallest brewing details – from equipment to timing – really make a difference in the final beer.

“This time, we’re finding out how much the fine details really matter when brewing beer,” says event organiser Kelsey Picard. “Equipment, timing, brewer quirks, tiny tweaks… do they make a difference, or is it all foam and no substance?”

The event will see five brewers from some of Tasmania’s favourite breweries and home brewing groups use the same recipe and ingredients to brew a beer.

Organised by Science Made Beerable Inc., the lineup includes Moo Brew, Hopfields Brewery, Van Dieman Brewing, King Island Brewhouse, and the Hobart Brewers homebrew club.

“Technically, they’ve all brewed the exact same beer, but have they really? We’re excited to taste the results and see how different the beers really are,” says Matt Fielding, event organiser.

Sponsored by Hop Products Australia, Voyager Craft Malt, and Bluestone Yeast, ExBEERimental Science will be held at Shambles Brewery on Friday 15 August.

The event is part of National Science Week, Australia’s annual festival celebrating science and its cultural and economic impact on society. First held in 1997, National Science Week has grown to become one of Australia’s largest festivals, with around 3.4 million people participating in nearly 2,000 events and activities last year.

In 2025, National Science Week will run from 9–17 August, with events held across the country and online. From stargazing and exploring meteorite craters, to ‘dark matter’ road trips, eco-crime labs, science festivals, music, comedy, expert panels, and interactive displays, the festival offers opportunities to meet scientists and dive into discoveries shaping our world.

National Science Week is supported by the Australian Government along with partners CSIRO, the Australian Science Teachers Association, and ABC Science.
