Gage Roads Brew Co turns 20 this year, and the brewery is marking the milestone with a birthday party and special release during the upcoming WA Day long weekend.

In 2005 when brothers Bill and John Hoedemaker launched Gage Roads, with a passion for good beer and a $25k credit card, they never anticipated becoming Western Australia’s leading independent brewery.

John says: “We’re proud to be able to create and build a brewery that’s part of WA’s history. We’ve had a hell of a lot of fun doing it, too, but we certainly couldn’t have done it without the West Aussies who love the same things we do – a good local beer and good times on the coast.

“So, to everyone that’s enjoyed a Single Fin or Side Track at a backyard barbie, down the beach, or off the wood at Gage Roads Freo, cheers to you!”

In the last decade alone, Gage Roads has sold more than 3.7 million cartons of beer nationwide. Fast forward to 2025 and more than 3.6 million pints of the brewery’s best-selling Single Fin Summer Ale have already been consumed this year in pubs across the country, which calls for a celebration.

Gage Roads OG Aaron Heary added: “It’s been a crazy little journey starting this brewery, and I don’t think we ever thought we’d make it this far. We’ve always had a lot of fun doing it, and so when it came to our 20th birthday bash, we wanted to do something that really felt like a Gage Roads party – something iconically West Australian – and so it was either going to be a massive boat party or WA’s biggest Sunday session… and we couldn’t find a big enough boat!”

The Gage Roads team are also honoring the milestone birthday with the release of a clear bottle lager, brewed at 3.8 per cent ABV with 100 per cent natural ingredients. Made with local barley and lagered for longer, Huey Coastal Lager promises that little bit extra flavour.

Gage Roads’ Head Brewer Ross Brown says Huey Coastal Lager, named after the seagull mascot, is all about patience and precision.

“Brewed with the best all-natural ingredients and lagered slow and cold, our extended cold-maturation process refines every aspect of the beer. The result? A brighter, cleaner lager that’s lightly hopped and big on refreshment. Huey is crisp, smooth, and endlessly crushable.”

Launching exclusively in WA, Huey Coastal Lager is available in 4x6x330ml bottles in independent bottle shops across the state.

The Gage Roads team will also pour Huey Coastal Lager for the first time at Gage Roads Freo this Sunday, during the WA Day long weekend, on tap alongside the full range of Gage Roads core beers and limited releases.

The 20-year birthday bash will take place from 11am until late, with Huey Coastal Lager being tapped at 3pm. The event will also feature local live music, entertainment, games, giveaways and door prizes.
