Grains Australia has announced that the barley variety Laperouse has officially been accredited as malting barley, marking the completion of the 2024 malt accreditation program.
Submitted by SECOBRA Research and Seednet, Laperouse received its accreditation following rigorous evaluation by the Grains Australia Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee (MBIBTC).
Described as having medium to high fermentability, Laperouse is suited to medium rainfall regions across the country, offering a new option for growers and brewers looking for reliable malting characteristics.
Growers interested in planting the new variety are encouraged to contact Seednet, which is handling seed distribution. Further information about Laperouse is available on the Seednet website.
Grains Australia highlighted that, while accreditation is a significant milestone, it is ultimately the market that will determine the commercial success of Laperouse.
“As with all previous accredited malting barley varieties, the market will determine the success of this new variety.”
