Four Australian breweries will put their wares to more than just a taste test next month as they brew an exclusive beer for ExBEERimental Science – a live-streamed National Science Week event on August 18.

Organised by Science Made Beerable, the brainchild of plant scientist Kelsey Picard and ornithologist Matthew Fielding (pictured above), ExBEERimental Science will look at the science behind specially brewed beers from three Tasmanian breweries – Spotty Dog, Buttons and Deep South – plus Melbourne’s Stomping Ground. Over the next few weeks the event organisers will be revealing what the four ExBEERimental beers are on their Facebook page.

Sponsored by Hop Products Australia, the event will be held at Hobart’s Shambles Brewery in front of a live audience as well as live-streamed for anyone wanting to get involved.

To play along at home you can purchase a four-pack of the exclusive beers via the Science Made Beerable website and then tune in on the night when Kelsey and Matthew, as well as the four brewers, will explore the science behind the beers.

First held last year, when Hobart Brewing, Shambles, OCHO and Van Dieman created the beers, Science Made Bearable’s live-streamed event received grant funds from National Science Week to run it again in 2021.

“Last year, we were able to test our idea and realised there’s a real thirst for more creative beer related events,” Matthew said. “There are so many great craft breweries in Australia and as scientists and beer nerds, we are so excited to receive the funds. It means we can give these breweries a larger audience following a generally tough 2020.”
