Judging for the Royal Adelaide Beer Show was well underway yesterday with entries from all over the country being tasted.

Reintroduced in 2011 after not being held since the 1800s, the show has attracted brewers of all sizes for this year’s competion.

Chief beer judge Simon Fahey, of Coopers Brewery, says the competition has several including lagers, ales, stouts, reduced alcohol beers and wheat beer.

“Exhibits are judged in a blind tasting from both a technical and consumer appreciation perspective, taking into consideration the beer’s appearance, aroma, flavour and overall impression,” he explained. “Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded, and gold medal winning beers will be considered for a trophy.”

In 2011 boutique Adelaide Hills’ brewery the Lobethal Bierhaus took out the Champion Exhibitor title, as well as three other awards.

Winners will be announced this Friday, July 6, 6pm at the Lion Hotel, SA.
