Happy days. The Hāpi Symposium is back on the Wellington events calendar this March right when New Zealand will be celebrating its 2023 hop harvest.

First held in April 2019 and then forced on to the shelf due to the pandemic, the event is a curated day of talks from local and international brewers, scientists and guest presenters and is staged by Hāpi Research – a hop breeding and market development program that’s collaboratively run by the New Zealand government’s Ministry of Primary Industries and the likes of hop farm Freestyle Hops and craft brewery Garage Project.

The March 24 Symposium at Wellington’s Te Papa Museum will cover the latest research from the hop world, brewing techniques and experiences from breweries and other industries.

Amongst this year’s speakers will be Stone Brewing’s senior manager of brewing and innovation Jeremy Moynier, Other Half Brewing co-founder Sam Richardson and The New IPA author and founder of Sapwood Cellars Scott Janish (pictured below).

As part of the Wellington arts and music festival CubaDupa that runs concurrently to the Symposium, Garage Project will be running a live music stage and beer garden out of their Wild Workshop brewery all weekend.
