Boilermaker House, a new craft beer and whisky venue, with a dedicated cured meat and cheese bar, is set to open in Melbourne this May.

This will be the fourth venue in Sven Almenning’s Speakeasy Group portfolio, which includes cocktail bars Eau-de-Vie in Sydney and Melbourne and The Roosevelt in Sydney.

Almenning has once again partnered with Greg Sanderson (co-owner and general manager of Eau-de-Vie Melbourne), with the pair stepping away from a cocktail heavy venue and sharing some of their other great passions with the Melbourne drinking community, malt whisky and craft beer.

In what promises to be a temple of malt whisky, Boilermaker House will also have a strong focus on craft beers with 12 rotating tap beers and another 50 brews available in cans or bottles.

“The craft beer is definitely more Sanderson’s forte than mine,” said Almenning. “When we first opened Eau-De-Vie in Sydney five years ago we kicked off with some 200 whiskies on the back bar. We doubled it to some 400 whiskies when Eau-De-Vie opened in Melbourne and our plan is to put some 700 malt whiskies on the back-bar at Boilermaker.”

To help soak up all those delicious craft beers and whiskies, Boilermaker House will have a four meter long marble top bar complete with a selection of 25 cured meats and nearly 30 cheeses. Guests can order the tasty goodies by weight. There will also be a small dining area at the back serviced by a kitchen.

“Although the menu will be largely driven by meat, to fit with our whisky and craft beer focus,” said Sanderson. “There will also be a small selection of vegetarian and seafood driven dishes”.

The name of the bar is inspired by the drinking tradition of matching a beer to a whisky, called a Boilermaker. With the aim to stock 700 whiskies, 12 tap beers and more than 50 in bottles or cans, the possibilities are deliciously endless.

“Boilermaker House will be a fun yet sophisticated, blues filled bar with a killer selection of booze,” said Sanderson.

The venue will have a 200-person capacity with on-street outdoor room for approximately 24 guests. Boilermaker House is located at 209-211 Lonsdale St. Melbourne and will be open Mon-Wed 4pm -3am, Thurs-Sun 12pm-3am.
