The fruit and oat cream theme continues for Modus Operandi’s Hazy Series as they release 07 – the Mixed Berry Smoothie (7%) – while the 08, due out before the end of the year, will follow a similar vein.
Coming in the close shadow of 06 – an apricot, coconut milkshake (7%) – and 05 – a cherry, coconut, cream (7%) – the 07 delivers a hefty dose of mixed berry and smoothie creaminess. But that dessert style has been balanced by a showcasing of the German Hallertau hop variety Huell Melon, a daughter of Cascade, which dishes up plenty of honeydew and stone fruit, while the late hop specialty Mystic slams forward gooseberry and blackcurrant to give it an entirely unique persona, but a crushable one nonetheless.
Matt Hogan, who is general manager of Modus’ currently under construction site in Newcastle and who is working collaboratively with the brewing team at their Mona Vale brewery, said the move to these styles in their Hazy Series was a deliberate ploy to take a new direction from the first four that explored different hop varieties at different ABV levels.
“We wanted to showcase a fruit and oat cream vibe in these four (05, 06, 07 and 08) but complement those with different complexities via some of the hops we’re using,” Matt said.
“And 08 will also be a play on that sort of smoothie or oat cream-type NEIPA.
“Beyond 08, we’re not entirely sure, but it may see us return to exploring and playing around with new and different hops or the different aspects of hazy beers.”
Hogan said, all going to plan, the new production brewery and brewpub in the Newcastle suburb of Merewether would turn the first sod before the end of October.
“It’s keeping us very busy, but it feels like we’re getting there after what has been a slow process.
“Once we get up and running we’ll have excellent capacity up in Merewether, which will take much of the production, freeing up Mona Vale to get a bit more creative with smaller batches and limited releases.”
