Birra del Borgo have followed up their popular Rubus – raspberry infused beer that currently sits on 94 on Rate Beer – with Prunus.

So named after the cherry’s botanical name – Prunus Avium or Cerasus according to variety – the team at Birra del Borgo have used their Duchessa spelt beer as a base before adding about 20 per cent fresh cherries, with stones intact, into the brew.

While this may sound a lot like a Belgian Kriek, this brew is reportedly not as sour and retains a lot of the base brew’s smoothness. Equally the beer is not sugary either, thanks to a well-balanced bitter aftertaste.

The beer weighs in at 5.8% ABV and is bright red in colour.

The brewery has also had a re-brand with the labels on their 330mL bottles now matching those of the 750mL bottles, making them easier to spot and more cohesive as a range.
