The Alaskan
Brewing Co., based in Juneau, has come up with an innovative way to lower its electricity bills: powering the brewery with
beer. Or more precisely using the spent grain to power their boiler system.

it is estimated that the new system could offset annual energy costs by 70
percent, the equivalent of around US$450,000.

Typically, a brewery’s
spent grain is sold to nearby farms as animal feed, but because Alaska
has so few, and because Juneau is not accessible by road, shipping costs outweighed potential profits from any sales.
