The Cicerone Certification Program is boosting its presence on the ground in Australia with in-person training courses being launched here for the first time in the lead up to tasting exams being staged in Victoria and NSW.

In Melbourne on May 1 is an off flavour training course before the Certified Cicerone in-person tasting exam on May 8. Then in Sydney on May 29 people can attend the off flavour training course ahead of the local training exam June 12. There is also an in-person BeerSavvy bootcamp course in Melbourne on June 19.

Details: This in-person course is geared towards the off flavors tested on the Certified Cicerone exam. Knowledge of these compounds is an integral part of achieving this certification however, the course is open to anyone of legal drinking age who is interested. Hone your skills on the following common faults found in beer: DMS, diacetyl, acetaldehyde, trans-2-nonenal, lightstruck and infection.

Event: Certified Cicerone In-person Tasting Exam

Details: This in-person tasting exam portion of Certified Cicerone exam covers off flavour recognition, style discrimination and practical demonstration. The written portion of the Certified Cicerone exam is administered online.

Event: BeerSavvy Bootcamp

Details: During this four-hour class you will, among other things, learn the difference between taste and flavour, sample different types of malt, smell hops from various nations, taste and study six foundational beer categories and understand the common variations that occur between styles as well as learn how to talk about the flavour of any beer with customers. Participants will also receive a short book of readings and resources to help them prepare for the Certified Beer Server exam.
