The Billabong Brewery with their Best WA Beer trophy.

Knocking out their east coast rivals, WA brewers have come up with the goods at this year’s Perth Royal Beer Show.

According to chief judge Richard Watkins, Head Brewer at the award-winning Wig and Pen in the ACT, WA, as the premier craft beer state in Australia, has lived up to its reputation.

“Not only did the competition increase by 70 entries to 343 entries, from all around Australia, but the standard was exceptionally high in both the professional and amateur competitions,” he says. “It was an exceptional result.”

The big winners on the night was the Myaree-based Billabong Brewery who not only took out the big award on the night – The Premier’s Trophy for Best WA Beer of the Show – but also Beef and Beer Club of Perth Trophy for Best Commercial Beer of the Show, The Pall Australia Trophy for Best Wheat Beer Packaged and The Cryermalt Trophy for Best Wheat Beer Draught.

That brewery’s stellar efforts were closely followed by the Swan Brewery who claimed four trophies on the night including The Hopco Trophy for Best Commercial Brewery, The Sail and Anchor Trophy for Best WA Brewery, The Edith Cowan University Trophy for Best Lager Packaged and the Lion Trophy for Best Reduced Alcohol Packaged.

There was a small break in the West Australian love-in when South Australia’s McLaren Vale Beer Company made off with The Cryermalt Trophy for Best Lager Draught, but the rest of the plaudits were all for the locals.

The Old Coast Road Brewery was next in line with two awards to their name – the Edith Cowan University Trophy for Best Stout Packaged and The Hopco Trophy for Best Stout Draught.

And local Perth brewing hotspot the Generous Squire won The Clancy’s Fish Pub Fremantle Trophy for Best Reduced Alcohol Draught.

Gage Roads added to their recent swag with The Beer & Brewer Magazine Trophy for Best Ale Packaged and favourite brew-bar hangout, The Monk Brewery and Kitchen, claimed the Beer and Beef Club of Perth Trophy for Best Ale Draught.

There was also a bit of love for local amateur brewers with Beer & Brewer contributor and homebrewer extraordinaire Jeremy Sambrooks picking up a swathe of awards including The James Squire Trophy for Best Amateur Brewer, The Beer and Beef Club of Perth Trophy for Best Stout and The Beer & Brewer magazine Trophy for Best Reduced Alcohol.

The Brewmart Trophy for Best Amateur Beer of the Show and Best Ale was presented to Aaron Greengrass of Success, while Dave Coleman’s Maltmans of Cloverdale won the T.W.O.C Trophy for Best Lager and Terry Weaver of Kalamunda walked away with The Deliverance Trophy for Best Wheat Beer.
