Ik drink sterke bier in Belgiƫ - 2008/05/07 02:31
Howdy brewsters, a few quick notes from the front line.
Our tyravels this year have brought us to the Mecca of beer, Belgium. Having spent the past few days drinking my fair share of local drops, it's time to share the joy (and some tasting notes!)
I apologise in advance for any spelling errors, as this Dutch keyboard is a little like forging new terriroty for my taste.
I'm going to start with the big one, mine and many others' fave.
Westvleteren - though the monks dont want to be associated with the commercial trqde, it's still available if you ask. A few bottle shops will tell you that they wont stock it,; but some (and not the dodgy ones, but those who take their beer more seriously) have it available if asked. Saved me renting a car to get to the Monastery! Still the best, but I did end up with one bottle that tasted more raw grain than finished beer.
New beer that gets a thumbs up from me; La Chouffe from Brasserie d'Achouffe. A strong, golden ale, very easy to drink with a clean, crisp palate and an amazingly clean aftertaste. Fantastic after a day in the sun (but it does pack a punch at 8%)
Pick of the bunch; De Ryck's Arend Dubbel. Blown away by this one. As a huge dubbel fan; this beer surprised me with the depth of flavour; huge caramel notes and a clear honey finish, with no dust or must. Very, very drinkable.
